Chris Siew started his
teaching career in 2003. Upon completing his teacher training at the National
Institute of Education (Singapore), he was posted to a local primary school. During
his six years at the school, he was involved in several ICT-related projects
that aimed to enhance students’ learning experience with technology. The experience
has sparked his interest in the area of education technology and has led him to
pursue The Masters in Instructional Design and Technology from National
Institute of Education (Singapore) in 2008.
- During the course of the program, he has developed research interests in the following areas:
- Enhancing the students’ learning experience with technology.
- Fostering students’ collaboration in the learning of mathematics in technology enhanced environments.
- The role of ICT in the development of higher order thinking skills.
Upon graduation, he joined
the Educational Technology Division (ETD) and was involved in several HQ
initiatives such as the FutureSchool@Singapore Programme and Propel-T (Prototyping
Pedagogies for Learning with Technology) Project. These projects seek to
cultivate a distinctive culture of innovation, experimentation with ICT and the
translation of learning theories into practice with the aim of school wide
implementation. During his time with ETD, he has also provided consultancy to
schools in the area of ICT integration into the school curriculum, in
particularly for mathematics education.
He is currently the Head
of Department (ICT) at a local primary school. He plays an active role in
spearheading the integration of ICT into teaching and learning. His current
projects includes enhancing the Arts and Music education through the use of
mobile devices (eg. iPads), developing higher order thinking for Mathematics
via online discussion and developing critical thinking skills for Science using
mind mapping ICT tools.
Chris is a passionate
educator who believes that each child is an unique individual who needs a
secure, caring, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature
emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is his mission as a
educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by
providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a
sharing of ideas. There are three elements that he believe are conducive to
establishing such an environment :
- the teacher acting as a guide,
- allowing the child's natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and
- promoting respect for all things and all people.
